Description
The deity portrayed on either side of this extraordinary censer is Tlaloc, the rain god. Two intertwined serpents (probably symbolizing the earth) hang from the loop handle and penetrate the headdress of the forward-facing figure. Incense would have been burned in such vessels to attract the favor of the god, rain for the crops, fertility for the land. It is a hypnotic piece, full of magic, symbolic of rites that are as old as civilization itself. - (PF.0602)
