| Description |
The shape of this vessel is elegant, and the
decorations are fabulous examples of the
animals admired by the Costa Ricans. On the
neck of the vessel is a monkey with prominent
male sex organs showing. In the jungle-like
environment of Costa Rica these monkeys were
rather commonplace, although they were highly
worshipped. The monkey's hands fly with an
upward movement, suggesting satisfaction and
ultimate happiness with whatever was contained
in this vessel. The geometrical designs are full of
playfulness, which is also seen in the three faces
on each leg of the vessel. These faces have
crocodile characteristics superimposed onto an
anthropomorphic head. The long snout, and
patterning above the eyes are playful, repeating
the jovial attitude of the monkey. The Costa
Ricans were interested in capturing the emotions
and life of the jungle through the choice of
animals and geometrical patterns.
