This male effigy whistle is modeled from
terracotta, and is left unpainted. The basic form
of the figure is modeled very simply, with most
emphasis, and impact, on the head. The head of
the man indicates age, as there are wrinkles
visible on the forehead. There are other clues
that hint of importance; the scarification on his
cheeks would denote high status, as would the
headdress and earrings. At the rear of the
whistle there are holes so that the whistle may
be played. This instrument demonstrates to us
that the Mayan culture was one of particular
advancement and enjoyment of many art forms.
