This seal is mounted in an 18 karat gold ring.

A handsome bull is depicted on this seal, engraved with careful detail to show its enormous strength and formidable horns. Seal rings were used throughout the ancient world to secure documents and other valuables, using a symbol or image as proof of its owner’s authority. The Sassanids were kings of Iran from 224 - 651 A.D. At its greatest extent their empire stretched from Syria to India, and from Iberia to the Persian Gulf. Major campaigns were launched against them by the Romans, including the emperor Valerian who was defeated and captures (A.D. 260) by Sapor I. The might of this kingdom, which sought to unite Iran with its own political and cultural identity, is reflected in this powerful image of a bull.
