Description
A wide rim provides substantial depth in this cup. The perfectly modeled body has a very thin ridge at the lip and vertical sides sloping dramatically to a small stemless base. Striations lines from the spinning of the wheel can be seen on the interior, against the beautiful red color of the clay, which adds dimension and richness. This cup was most likely made for local use, since exportation of ceramics from Magna Grecia (the pre-Roman name for the Greek colonies located in southern Italy) was limited. Therefore, it presents a good example of domestic pottery used by those who could afford the finer ware from the better workshops of the region. - (PF.5383)
