Though the anatomy is done in a simple manner,
the beauty of this work is still more than evident.
Typical in Djenne style, the woman is only
partially covered with no body paint yet with
intricate body scarification. Her kneeling pose
and her slightly bowed head, creates a look of
sorrow or perhaps frustration. The scarification
on her head and shoulders shows snakes in the
most natural curved position. The earthenware
material allows her to seem approachable as well
as beautiful in her simplicity and grace. The
small cloth skirt allows her to remain modest,
accentuating her natural style.
Throughout the years beauty remains timeless.
Such a piece with little adornment simplicity
seems to say more, bringing her to life, as well
as taking us back to a time long since past.
