The peoples of ancient Mesoamerica had a great
appreciation for the natural world. The native
flora and fauna of Costa Rica inspired artists to
recreate their forms in glittering gold. Here, with
timeless charm, the Chiriqui craftsman has
fashioned a golden armadillo. With his armored
shell, long tail, and pointed snout and ears, this
little creature enchants us today as he surely did
to his ancient owner so long ago. We can only
hope he does not tire of our admiration, and roll
himself into a golden ball to hide.
