Chimu weavers created textiles that combined
brilliant colors with richly stylized patterns. Such
weavings served a variety of functions:
decorations, ritual objects, burial shrouds, and
clothing. This superb tapestry uses a limited but
pleasing palette of red, yellow, and brown
vegetable dyes. The central motifs, frontal
figures typical of Chimu weaving, appear to
represent fertility gods associated with
agriculture or vegetation. Such textiles remind
us that Ancient Peru was a lively, colorful place,
a world full of sound and movement. As we
admire the skillful beauty of this tapestry, we
share our pleasure with those who first beheld it
centuries ago.
