Taotie mask images adorn the molded side
handles of this
dark green glazed vessel. The body is divided
into sections in strap-work bands
that circle the vessel. Seated on a rounded base,
the body is compressed below
the waist, contracts at the neck and flares out at
he lip.

As an expression of admiration for the ways of
the
ancients, this ceramic vessel was created to
imitate the masterful bronzework of
earlier dynasties. Bronzework carried important
ritual significance and status
value. Set forms were reproduced in ceramic
much for the same purpose, but also
to provide functionary use. This Hu was designed
to carry liquids such as wine
or water.
