For Christians the cross is the most potent
symbol in existence, representing earthly
suffering, spiritual liberation and eternal life.
This handsome cross shows the crucifixion on
one side, and the image of a saint on the other.
Christ is given a somewhat abstract treatment,
with his head and waist separated from the body,
with a deep deft down his chest exposing his
heart. Double lines around his head give the
impression of a halo. On the reverse the saint
lifts his hands in a blessing, or to reveal the
stigmata. His body too seems as if it is half in
the other world of spirit. Since this is a reliquary,
the hair or other part of the saint is locked
inside, still sealed after these many centuries.
With pure simplicity this lovely cross shows the
passion of Christ and the piety of a saint, locked
together in a pious bond for eternity.
