The Virgin Mary is the central theme of this lovely icon. She is depicted blessing the sinners gathered around her, who look up to her with adoration and repentance. Two banners above her on either side read, from left to right, "those who lead a sinful life...Jesus Christ will bring you salvation." Above the Virgin is the inscription, "the image of the Mother of God." Surrounding Mary are eighteen saints and angels, the most exalted are at the top: from left to right, the Archangel Michael, Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ, St. John the Baptist and the Archangel Gabriel. Each of the busts is encircled by graceful foliage set against a rich blue and white background. For the faithful this fine icon represents the nurturing quality of mothers, and particularly the mother of God whose purity and holiness transcends all others. - (PF.5220)
