This beautiful head seems to have
emerged from
the raw stone as if by a divine act. It
is like an
apparition, a face so serene it might
appear in
the clouds, or in the vision of someone
very
devout. The tranquil eyes look upwards
towards
heaven. The eyelids seem to flutter in a
trance of
revelation, or the bliss of a holy
person in touch
with God. The lips are delicate and
beautifully
carved, appearing as if about to speak.
A slight
trace of a smile reminds us of the
compassion
and strength of the great Buddha. Upon
his head
is an exquisite headdress composed of a
band of
'beads' along the forehead, and a crown
of a
sacred lily in the center. The
otherworldly
presence of this sculpture is suitable
to a person
who was both a man and divine being,
whose
image and presence gives us strength in
the
trials of every day life.
