It is not known whether this mace head actually
saw duty on the battle field, or whether it served
only in a ceremonial capacity. In the Ancient
Americal, such weapons often signified the high
rank and power of those who carried them. Its
abstract balance makes it appealing to the
modern eye; we can almost forget its potential
for danger. As we hold it, we cannot help but
wonder where it has been, what secrets it might
tell about the extremes of human nature.
