There are few artistic creations that can immediately evoke a feeling of well being and delight, and this splendid mask is just such an example. The jollity and joyfulness it possesses may come directly from the eyes, which are very simple in form and yet so expressive in laughter. A sense of merriment comes from the grinning mouth and gleaming red lips, smiling for all the world to see. The colored bands of red, white, and black are unique in African art, as is the crescent-shaped extension with writing on top of the head. A very clever touch is the addition of a bold red line down the center of the forehead. This has the effect of concentrating one’s attention on the eyes, and also of giving the face further animation. In this mask, we see a work of art which radiates warmth and tenderness – feelings that are truly universal. - (PF.4831)
