Description
The direct visual appeal and intrinsic charm of this standing youth is a result of a resurgence in the artistic use of bronze in Asia Minor under the influence of indigenous and foreign stimuli (from both the Near East and central Europe) which commenced about 800 B.C. Among these miniature sculptures, such as the one our eyes now behold, are some of the most sublime creations of Greek civilization, and indeed in all western art. Almost exclusively used as votive offerings, these have been found in profusion in most of the great sanctuary sites. As a tangible evocation of the attitudes and ideals which motivated Greek society and culture, this stylistic standing youth helps us recapture something of the essence of the Greeks' intensely exhilarating exploration of human life and destiny-- a quest that haunts and compels our imagination even today. - (FZ.330)
