Description
Human effigies carrying loads on their backs portray an extraordinary realism. This beautiful male figure is managing the weight of his load with a strap or tumpline over his forehead. This particular figure holds the tumpline with both hands for greater ease. The Ancient Meso- American custom of carrying burdens in this fashion survives to the present day. It seems more likely that the pottery he is carrying is a water jar. Most figures wear only a breechcloth, although this figure is devoid of all clothing. He has retained his remarkable color, which has been polished smooth by caring hands centuries ago. - (PF.2767)
