Description |
This charming olpe has a wide upper portion, with the sides sloping sharply to the slightly flared base. A short, straight-backed handle is attached close to the neck and on the everted lip. Red slip covers most of the vessel, while the lower portion is in cream or buff. Though simple in design, the fine proportions attests to the stein achieved by Greek potters working in Southern Italy. The olpe, such as this one, was used for pouring wine after having first been taken from a larger storage vessel (amphora).
