Description |
Seen facing right is the powerful
profile of one of Alexander the Great's
most impressive generals. A narrow band
representing a diadem encircles his
head. There is also the unique feature
of a bull's horn just above the right
temple. Seleukos I (Nicator) (358 - 281
B.C.) fought along side Alexander,
joining in the campaign as far as India.
After the great Macedonian's death,
Seleukos founded a kingdom that
comprised almost the whole of
Alexander's conquests, with the
exception of Egypt. The engraver has
managed to capture the strength of this
remarkable ruler from images on the
coins of the period.
