The flower in the center of this young man's hair
suggests that he may be one of the youthful
gods associated with fertility and the
resurrection rites of spring. Such deities as
Adonis and Attis were worshipped in the
classical world because their cults promised
perpetual renewal and rebirth, a triumph over
death. In the charming features of this young
person we see youthful optimism, eternal and
unaging.
