Description |
Holding objects perhaps associated with
mourning, this powerful figure was buried to
express his grief through eternity. Though his
clothing is simple, his jewelry suggests his high
status in ancient Mexican society. What holds
our gaze, however, is the vivid look on his face.
He seems to see beyond the tangible world to
the very depths of the unknown. In all the
centuries since this figure was created, man has
been unable to answer the questions about life
and death that he asks. We are caught up in his
awed state, linked by timeless human
understanding.
