Description |
Painted with a vivid, lively style, this Mayan bowl
depicts a procession of figures wearing
elaborate, feathered headdresses. As with much
of Mayan art, it is ambiguous about the
distinction between the mortal and divine realms.
Is this a worldly festival, with humans masked
and costumed as gods? Or does it depict a
parade of divinities in heaven? Painted in the
sunset colors so beloved of the Maya, the
draughtsmanship has a quick, impressionistic
quality that adds to its charm. We can feel the
hand of the artist at work with a sense of vitality
and movement. HT. 13cm(5 1/8IN): DIAM.
