Centuries ago, this striking woman was placed in
a tomb to keep eternal company with the
deceased. Her gesture is traditionally one of
mourning in ancient Mexico, and her lips seem
parted in sad lament. Yet, in contrast with this
attitude of grief, her voluptuous form recalls the
sensual pleasures of the earth. Through her
unblushing sensuality she offers the promise of
renewal and rebirth in the afterlife. This blend of
sadness and joy mirrors the essential paradox of
human life. To look upon her is to understand
something universal and timelss about our
existence.
