This small bowl strikes a delighful balance between the formal and the naive. Its patterns attempt some geometric order, but the vagaries of the artist's hand have made them asymmetrical. There is something touchingly human in this, a reminder that perfection is elusive at best. The externals of the world have changed a great deal since this pot was new, but the essentials have altered but little.
