The sorcerers or shamans of ancient times were
supposedly able to change their human shape
into an animal form. The representation of this
act of magic is seen in the mask of birds or other
animals the shamans wore during ceremonies.
The face of this shaman seems already to have
metamorphosed into a parrot. His arms are
about to lift upwards. His right foot is extended
as if to help him take off in full flight. The form
still bears the impressions of the artist's fingers,
and also the instrument that was probably used
to create the intricate band on the headdress.
This shaman has flown into the modern world,
and from his impish grin, he seems to be greatly
amused!
