Description
An exciting example of Jalisco artistry, this dramatic clay female figure was created during the pre-classic period in the west Mexico state of Jalisco. Here, ancient artisans handcrafted extraordinary figures such as this seated female, to accompany the deceased on their lengthy journey to the netherworld. With a dramatic elongated head, characteristic of Jalisco figures, and a pointed nose that accentuates this extended shape, she further commands our attention by focusing her intensive gaze through deep slit eyes. Moreover, large tasseled ear ornaments add an additional note of drama to her already striking image. At the same time, the figures foreshortened, upraised arms combine with her open, expressive mouth to give us an impression that she may very well be communing with her gods. What prayers her ancient spirit speaks we may never know. However, what is certain is that this compelling female figure evokes in us a sense of magic and wonder as we gaze at her image and ponder her complexities. - (PF.2476)
