Description

Resplendent with mythological animal/human figures, this bowl is a classic example of Mayan symbolism. The two humanoid figures are incised to give the appearance of relief work. The design of the identical figures suggests that they were gods caught up in a frenzied dance, which leads us to conclude that the bowl had ritualistic importance. Separating the gods are two spiny-backed serpents whose design is more representational then real. Were these serpents messengers of the gods or accomplices in their frantic merry-making. If only this bowl could talk, what secrets would it divulge? - (PF.2836)
