Reduced to elemental anatomical form, this red
figure still projects a singular grace. As with the
artwork of a child, we are unaware of
spontaneity, freshness for observation. The artist
sees the same things we see, but he has made
them less familiar, so that we take nothing for
granted. The decoration is beautifully simple,
with an emphasis on the long, elegant neck,
which is dotted with white, probably emulating
jewelry. He holds a cylindrical jar in his hands,
which would contain an offering to the gods. The
earrings and the nose ring denote a man of
extreme importance; the broad shoulders also
give an impressive presence. His partially
distended belly emphasizes his nakedness, yet
this and the pure color of the slip, make him a
beautiful piece to behold and treasure.
