Description |
Handsomely appointed, this Chinesco style figure
from southwestern Nayarit demonstrates the
many facets, which have come to be associated
with this particular style. Though the name
"Chinesco" is purely a trademark, the
characteristics are particular, such as the
impressionistic details, vaguely oriental feeling,
naturalistically treated face and the general
serenity of expression. However, nature has
taken a hand in the appearance of this wonderful
figure, adding to and subtracting from the
original paint until it wears a costume that
resembles autumn leaves. Like the leaves, it
reminds us in a bittersweet way of the passage
of time and of the changes that inevitably
happen to us all. With the Vermilion colored legs
and facial stripping, it is clear that the love of
adornment is as old as civilization itself. Yet a
quiet mystery remains behind the calm facial
expression, one that cannot and will not be
discovered, adding to its profound uniqueness
and graceful beauty.
