Over the years, artists have been able to create a
tremendous milieu of art that is astounding in its
creativity and ingenuity. This particular
earthenware piece is covered with polychrome
decoration. The tripod design helps to support
the piece and add uniformity and stability to the
vessel as well. The interpretation of the anatomy
is basic yet the artist decorated this piece
entirely, suggesting that the piece would have
been presented as a centerpiece, and seen in the
round. The face of this woman is highly molded
with large almond eyes that are highlighted by an
aquiline nose with slightly flared nostrils. The
eyebrows are raised and the mouth is
accentuated by red. The decoration on the work
is done with geometric patterns that include
cross-hatching. All together there is a distinct
fluidity that can be found on all parts of this
piece, adding to its charm and rarity.
