Women are the promise of life. They are fertility
with a human face. Surely this charming female
figurine was associated with ancient fertility
rites. She sits in a casual pose while looking
straight at us. The hands are on her hips, a
popular pose in a figure such as this one.
Though very small no detail has been lost on this
piece, which is an example of the craftsmanship
of the artist. She captivates us with her
harmonious fullness of form and the effective
momentum of her designs. The interlocking mat
patterns may be indicative of dress or body
painting. Large ear spools adorn her ears and
her eyes are opened wide and alert. There is also
a hallowed out hole that once allowed her to be
suspended from the neck. She possesses a sense
of liveliness and a seductiveness that
immediately captures our hearts and
imaginations.
