Artists from all cultures and throughout history
have delighted in depicting animals. In Ancient
Costa Rica animals was a popular subject
matter- particularly the jaguar, alligator, snake
and armadillo. Carving in hard stone was
relatively rare compared to pottery and work in
basalt. This charming example shows that
curious and delightful creature, so reminiscent of
dinosaurs on a small scale! Its form is quite
abstract, each detail carefully done to give the
maximum effect with a minimum of line. The
armor plates front and rear are simple and
effective, heightened by the curved bands in the
center; which gives a sense of movement. The
feet are cleverly curled underneath, adding a
further dimension to the overall piece. Most
engaging are the eyes, simply cut in a sickle
shape and wonderfully expressive. It is always
very satisfying to discover an object an artist
took obvious pleasure in creating.
