Description
The mighty elephant is immediately associated with strength, massiveness and preeminence over other animals and humans. These characteristics have long been used in association with chiefs who wished to be perceived as possessing these admirable qualities. This very fine mask captures both the power and gentleness of the elephant. Masks of the Bassa are usually used by either the men's or women's associations during public performances. Though once the elephant was feared as both a threat to man and fields, its symbol is ironically used as a form of protection. The sculptor has given full breadth to the magnitude of this beast, with expressive details such as the finely carved eyes, curvaceous ears and tapered trunk. Another symbol of power is the skin of a wild cat covering the back and top of the head. In this mask, the beauty of one of nature's most impressive animals is brought to life in a sculpture of grace and refinement. - (PF.4815)
