Ikhoko pendants are miniature replicas in ivory or wood of certain mbuya masks. The latter are wooden masks decorated with raffia which, in past times, would have participated in dances related to a variety of ritual or festive occasion, most importantly the closure of the circumcision rites. These masks were passed down from generation to generation, gaining spiritual powers accumulated through the ages. Mbuya masks represent a potential threat to those who sculpted or guarded them, and to their immediate relatives as well. The function of ikhoko pendants was to protect such individuals from the damaging forces of the larger mbuya masks. The forms of the ikhoko pendants, including the pointed coiffure, are borrowed from the specific mbuya masks they imitate. Worn around the neck (two holes have been carved into the sides of this lovely example), the ikhoko reveals a respect and proper appreciation of the power that reside within the mbuya masks. - (PF.5817)
