Description |
Designed for private devotion this very fine
plaque depicts the Archangel Gabriel, framed in
the center, at the moment of announcing to the
Virgin Mary that she has conceived the Son of
God. He is dressed in the style of a Russian
nobleman of the 16th Century, with hands
crossed over the chest and a geometrically
ornate halo. The lovely background of green,
yellow, white and blue enamel adds dimension
and perspective. Surrounding the angel are
fifteen saints each set in a roundel and
connected by leafy branches, as if a tree of
saintly life. In the center at top is Christ offering
His blessings, with His Mother to His right and St.
John the Baptist at left. Within the frame of this
plaque is represented the hierarchy of the
Church, of holy figures both human and spirit,
and the beautiful Archangel presenting his
miraculous message not only to the Mother of
God, but also to all humanity.
