Dressed in delicate clothing and head cover the Virgin holds a scroll in her left hand as she looks at it with reverence. Her large halo is bordered on the outer edge by a row of embossed circles. The ornate floral patterns surrounding her, along with the areas of dark blue enamel touched by patches of white, give the impression she is standing in a garden at night, engaged in a moment of deep contemplation. She appears on this icon as a mortal woman who is pure in spirit and blessed with a saintliness that will soon transcend into eternal life.
