There was a very ancient tradition in Peru for
vessels such as these depicting vital and explicit
sexual scenes. They were buried in tombs as
evocations of life's pleasures, and as symbols of
fertility and continuity. The world has changed
almost beyond recognition since this lively vessel
was created, but its subject still strikes a
responsive chord. Like their predecessors, the
Inca understood what was of enduring
importance in human life. This vase celebrates
those things with unabashed enjoyment. HT.
