Moche Stirrup Vessel with Four Lizards - K.082 Origin: Northern Coast of Peru Circa: 1
AD
to 300
AD Dimensions:8" (20.3cm) high Catalogue: V5 Collection: Pre-Columbian Medium: Terracotta
This splendid vessel balances a sensitive
observation of nature with an appreciation for
formal design. Four geometrically adorned
lizards touch the tips of their tails and chase
each other in a perpetual swirling dance around
the sides of the pot. The lower half of the vessel
and the handle bear traces of copper, which
suggests that it may have been decorated with
foil at one time. This is truly a superb example of
Moche art at its best.
