Mezcala Stone Standing Figure - PF.0740 Origin: Western Mexico Circa: 300
BC
to 300
AD Dimensions:4" (10.2cm) high Collection: Pre-Columbian Style: Mezcala Medium: Stone
The great Italian artist Michelangelo once said
that trapped inside every block of marble was a
figure; his task as a sculptor was to free that
figure from its bonds. The artists of Mezcala
must have felt the same way about these stones,
smoothed by millenia in shallow river beds. The
figure and the stone seem at one, as if they were
both created at the same time.
