Mayan Sculpture Of A Standing Woman - PF.0717 Origin: Guatemala Circa: 300
AD
to 600
AD Dimensions:6.5" (16.5cm) high Collection: Pre-Columbian Style: Mayan Medium: Terracotta
Round-hipped as any primitive fertility goddess,
this nude woman holds her gently swollen belly
as if to focus attention on it. She appears to be
praying. Is she pregnant, or does she want to be?
We are left wondering about the lives behind
such dedicatory figures. This is perhaps the only
remaining trace of some real-life woman for
whom these matters were of vital importance. Or
perhaps somewhere her descendants live on.
