Ixtlán del Rio Style Nayarit Terracotta Sculpture of a Seated Man - PF.0931 Origin: Nayarit, Mexico Circa: 300
BC
to 300
AD Dimensions:5" (12.7cm) high x 2.875" (7.3cm) wide Collection: Pre-Columbian Medium: Terracotta
Richly costumed and wearing considerable
jewelry, this orange and white slipped figure
represents an individual of prominence. His
distended mouth suggests he is lost in a drug-
induced trance, an important ritual associated
with funerals and ceremonies of transition
between one world and another. So engrossed is
he that he has failed to notice he has arrived in a
very different world indeed.
