| Description |
On one level, this splendid sculpture represents
the mourner who placed her long ago in an
ancient tomb. She shoulders a basket filled with
fruit, which was intended to sustain the
deceased through eternity. Her voluptuous
figure offers another clue to her function: she
evokes the eternally female, fertility and
countinuity of life. Her message is one of hope
for renewal and rebirth. Centuries later, we
realize that her promise has been fulfilled. No
matter how much progress has been made, the
essentials of human existence remain the same
as when she was created.
