Description
The early art of Ecuador concentrates on people in attitudes of reverence and prayer. Most likely, these were votives meant to win the eternal favor of the gods. This unusual bearded head, created to hold an offering of food or drink, looks heavenward with open mouth and an expression of awe. His elaborate headdress and beard suggest that he is a person of rank, perhaps a priest. What is it that focuses his rapt gaze? Is it the wonders of the spirit realm, or simply the modern world in which he now finds himself? - (PF.1474)
