Painted in rich sunset colors or red, orange and
black, this bold plate was left as a funerary
offering at the grave of some Mayan notable.
Decorated with a glyph of a God's head, it
possesses an aura of mystical power that reaches
across the barriers of time. The hole puched in
the center of the plate is the result of a Mayan
custom for freeing the souls of the dead to pass
into the underworld. Bold and abstract, such a
plate appeals to modern sensibilities as it no
doubt did to Ancient Mayan ones. As we hold it
in our hands, gazing at its hypnotic motif, we are
transported back to the glories of a vanished
