This dramatic mask is a stunning example of the
creativity and artistic skill of the Pre-Columbian
people of Costa Rica. Masterfully carved from
green stone, this expressive mask probably
symbolized a death head. A series of small
perforations around the perimeter suggests that
it was sewn onto something, either a large effigy
figure or, more likely, a funerary bundle.
Powerfully primitive and strikingly modern, this
carved stone mask represents a vibrant link
between the past and the present, between life
and death. How fortunate we are to be able to
experience its cosmic energy, a force that truly
transcends our mortal boundaries.
