A shaman in Ancient Costa Rica directed rituals
and ceremonies. We can assume that this
magnificent stone sculpture is a shaman, an
individual who is considered a mediator between
the humans and the supernatural world. The
shaman identified and cured illnesses, carried
out initiation and purification rites, foresaw the
future, protected the community, and had the
power to convert himself into animal form.
Notice the beautifully rounded shoulders, torso
and legs. The technical skill involved in creating
this sculpture is superb due to the difficulty of
carving the stone. The fascinating mask with
headdress is a masterpiece within itself. Here,
the shaman is wearing a crocodile mask. Thus,
he is most probably converting himself into a
crocodile. The crocodile was a symbol of
fertility, abundance and power. Such vital
qualities were certainly desired by the shaman
and for the community's survival, as well.
Enigmatic and fascinating, this magnificent
sculpture is the tangible testimony of an ancient
sophisticated culture.
