| Description |
Seated in a cross-legged position, this
handsome figure depicts a man of great honor
and stature. The heavy green stone adds
permanence and solidity to the piece yet also
demonstrates the quality that the artist was
trying to achieve. Within the hairline fissures of
the stone, red cinnabar can be seen, suggesting
that the figure was used for ritual practices as
well as for symbolic use. Found in a tomb, the
sculpture would have had special functions both
varied and important. The facial features are
expressive, with prominent almond-shaped
eyes, and a full mouth. This type of expression
however, leaves questions, and a feeling of
wonder about the past, making us want to learn
more, and therefore perhaps learn a little more
about ourselves.
