Description |
Under the curved "roof" of this icon sits Christ enthroned, representing Him after the crucifixion in His divine form as both judge and savior of the world. Scenes from His life begin at upper left with His birth or Nativity, followed by His baptism, entry into Jerusalem and the Ascension. Touches of blue and white enamel give perspective and make the complex events of each scene seem more immediate. These themes were chosen to give the pious an instantaneous overview of Jesus’ life--from birth to death, from flesh to spirit--as the viewer journeys through the "windows" of the Christian religion.
