As if from an illuminated manuscript cast in
bronze, this fine icon shows Christ giving His
blessings, His right hand raised in benediction as
he holds the Holy Book. The inscription on either
side of Him reads, "Lord Jesus Christ, the
Pantocrator." Very detailed and lush vines
surround the outer border, which makes not only
a lovely decorative element, but also serves to
remind us of the wine of the Eucharist. Twisting
vines around Christ himself appear as if He is
emerging from the 'tangle' of the world into the
light of God. For the pious, such icons as this
handsome example have long been an
indispensable part of daily worship.
