This small sculpture of a horse jumping onto a
rock is carved of genuine lapis. The dramatic
climbing movement is beautifully depicted by the
elegant curvature of the long, graceful neck,
arching joints of the legs, and the tilted head.
The wavy hair and tail also add to the drama of
the animal's action. This horse generates energy
and an impression of gracefully swift movement.
The shades of bright blue of the lapis outlines
the motion and the arching contours of the body,
creating a mystical feeling. People have long
considered horses as magical beings because of
their symbolic connotations with the cosmos and
the unconscious realm. During ancient times,
horses were even endowed with certain powers
of divination. This beautifully carved horse
reveals a timeless, mystical quality.
