| Description |
Music as a "language" is as important in communicating ideas as the dance movements performed by dancers in ritual ceremonies. Sophisticated rhythm and syncopated cadence created by drums and other instruments is as structurally complex as the patterned, rhythmical arrangements of the costumes. Each element works together to present a powerful single effect of "elevating" the audience to another level beyond the physical world. These handsome drums were worn so the musician could move about without disrupting his playing. In this way the drummer becomes part of the dance, and not merely a stationary figure. The varying sizes of each drum produces a different pitch and tone which maintained the constant, mesmeric effect of Yoruba music. Even when not being played and no sound is emitted, these fine drums still retain the magic of ancient ritual dance.
